Recap Post

On Thursday we visited the largest slum in Africa called Kibera... This was a very challenging day because we saw some very upsetting things. The living conditions of the slum are not conditions anyone should be living in. While in Kibera we visited 2 families who's homes would be the size of my dining room table and each of these families had a lot of people living with them. When we visited these homes we got to talk with the families and pray with them it was a very special moment to hear about their lives. While walking around Kibera the smell was very unbearable and garbage and waste was everywhere. A million people live here and have a hard time making ends meet, leaving this place I had a new perspective and a better sense of gratitude for all God has given me. Thank you God for everything you have provided me with because I do not deserve any of it. The feelings I felt here I do not want to forget, the people of kibera will always have a place in my heart and my prayers. What I learned from this day is to be grateful for everything. Simple things like clean tap water and a fridge full of food are all things that I should be praising God for. This trip so far is changing me so much and is giving me so many new perspectives on life.

After the walk through Kibera we then went to Mulli Children Families which is a place that rescues street children. It was great to go to MCF after walking through the slum because it showed that there is hope for such a hopeless situation. We spent 5 days at MCF and I have never felt so welcomed and happy. We entered MCF and I felt like I was at home, God is doing so many amazing things at this place. Our time at MCF was spent visiting class rooms, playing sports, planting trees, getting our hair styled and hiking. I had such a blast at MCF. Visiting all the kids was so fun because they were all so happy to see visitors and it was great to laugh and talk with them and to hear their stories. Each kid at MCF has a different story on why they got rescued it was really special to get an insight into a part of their life. Sometimes the language barrier was an issue but it was a really good experience to have to try to interact with someone from a different culture. The thing I really enjoyed at MCF was playing soccer and volleyball with the MCF kid I loved this because even though we were all so different we could come onto same terms and understand each other through sport. It was also cool to say I played soccer and volleyball against Kenyans who were insanely talented. Another thing we did was hike mount mulli... this was not your normal hike... lets just say if it was hiked in Canada it may not of been legal because some parts were very steep. Hiking mount mulli was amazing because it gave me a boost of confidence that I could face my fear of heights and it felt really awesome to accomplish something that made me so nervous. The hike was also a cool experience because we woke up at 5:30 to go hike but it was so worth it because the view was unreal... Pics will be coming, I am just very tired right now. Every moment at MCF was a highlight for me I met so many amazing people and learned soo much from the community. I hope to one day go back to MCF because I have never been somewhere that is so joyful and I want to feel that joy again.

So today is my birthday !!! I am 17 and I think by far this had to be my best birthday yet. Being in Kenya made it awesome but also to be around such amazing people has been such a blessing. When we were leaving MCF the kitchen staff surprised me with a cake which I was not expecting and I burst into tears because it felt so good to feel appreciated and to think that they put in the effort to celebrate my birthday with me. My birthday was also awesome because the group I am with surprised me with a present and my room full of balloons. It was such a great birthday and I am so thankful I got to celebrate it here.

Well I don't know how good of a blog post this was because the emotions and feelings I experienced over the past 5 days are hard to put into words. Anyways have to be up early tmw to go for a hike... don't know when I will have wifi next so...

I'll see ya,
A.S.
